One of Jackie’s friends had this idea a few weeks ago to try a detox. The basic premise here was whole foods, no meat, no dairy, no refined sugar, low oil, no alcohol, no caffeine detox. Really what you’re doing is teaching your body to go without all the junk that we normally crave. Jackie asked me about it and we were both like sure, why not, we’ll join you on this journey. We even got Bethany to join in with us too. So the way this one works is that you sign up through Simple Green Smoothies and they send you a meal planner for the week. They also hook you up with a Facebook group for support.
We started out on Monday and to be honest, for the majority of the week it’s been super easy. As I sit here writing this, I’m somewhat bored, so all I want to do is eat, but other than that, we haven’t had a lot of the issues that others have been seeing. We’ll get into that in a minute, but first I wanted to say that the food is great. With the exception of the one smoothie that I found to be just a bit potent on the greens. I suspect that had more to do with our cherries having little to no flavor than anything else. Here are some examples of a few items we’ve had in the last day. Grilled/Roasted Broccoli steaks, and a Watermelon Blueberry smoothie bowl. We’ve definitely got new recipes that we’ll be keeping in our rotation for sure!
Ok, so onto the health stuff, which is the whole reason for doing it in the first place. I would certainly say that my mind has been more fresh. There is no fogginess going on up there. I’m totally not bloated, and Jackie agrees on that count for her. It’s just helped to get our body back in sync. My taste buds are reset in terms of how sweet and great tasting the fruit and vegetables are. Oh, and I suppose I should note that I have dropped almost 11 lbs in the 6 days we’ve been doing it. Now, I will say, I didn’t need to be dropping 11 lbs, so the last day or two, I’ve been upping my snack portions a bit. I wasn’t following the instructions in that I didn’t tail back my exercise. Which I probably should have, especially considering how dang hot it is here in Northern, VA. The weight loss also was probably a bit water related as we totally had our favorite take out Chinese the night before starting. Good Fortune always delivers on taste!
We haven’t had any of the crazy sugar cravings, or headaches, or complaints about lack of protein. We simply feel good. It might have been easier on us given that we were already vegan going into this. For people that haven’t eaten that way, I could certainly see your body rebelling a bit. I recall when we made the change, I went about 2 weeks before I started seeing an uptick in energy.
On a side note, I’ve also been reading the book Proteinaholic, by Dr. Garth Davis. It’s been a really great read so far. I haven’t got to all the science portion where he breaks down the diseases, but he makes everything so approachable and just intuitive. It’s funny how we as a culture have stopped talking about actual food, and now break everything down into the macronutrients. Let me just say this, I’m in complete agreement that if we’re getting enough calories, we’re getting enough protein. If you want natures answer to that just look to the Silverback Ape, the Elephant and the Rhino.

We’re feeling good here and we’re also happy to just have a weekend to rest. This is not something I’d do all the time, but it was a nice way to reset and get more whole foods into our body. We’re playing some games with our friends tonight, so it should be totally low key. Hope you’re all having a great week.
