Friday Free for All

It’s certainly shaping up to be a great day.  Here’s what’s happened so far as well as the plan for what’s going to happen the rest of the day.  (I guess by the time I post this it will all have happened, but I digress).  Jacks and I both started the day off with a run.  I wasn’t necessarily planning on getting out this morning, but it was still raining and I can’t pass up a run in the rain.  I don’t know what it is but I absolutely love it.  I’m also super proud of Jacks, she did 5.2 miles.  That’s awesome! Breakfast today is oatmeal with all the fixings.

We’re just going to hang around the house for a bit, and then we’ll be off to our favorite vet’s office Caring Hands Animal hospital for Olive to get her nails trimmed… Weird fact about our dog, she just LOVES the vet.  She’s so bizarre.

We’re going to head down to Arlington after that and sell some gear at a consignment shop, hit up a great little bakery/coffeeshop, Bakeshop, and probably get a smoothie for a snack at South Block.

Salted Oatmeal Apricot Cookie!

Dogs want smoothies too!

Lunch is/was a nice big salad.

We’ve got a massage planned for the afternoon, and then, one of the most fun things we’ve had in the plans for awhile.  We’re going to make dinner with both Connor and Bethany.  We’re still trying to figure out the exact menu, but there is just something about cooking together and breaking bread together that is awesome.  It’s been a huge blessing to have the two of them around a lot lately.  It’s kind of sad that they’ll be headed off to British Columbia in a week.  But I’m really excited to hear those stories as well.

Speaking of the massage, that seems to be one of those things that often leads to comments about us having a great marriage.  I find that kind of interesting, but it really does help to put things into perspective.  I do think we have a great marriage, but it takes a lot of work.  As a man you can’t give up on dating your spouse.  It may be easier for us in not having kids, but I’m going to challenge you to look at your priorities.  Even without kids, we have to make an effort.  It requires putting things on the calendar, and it requires putting the phone down and talking.  It also takes a very clear understanding that it’s a commitment.  And for us it’s a covenant as well.  We couldn’t do it without having God in our lives.  We were trained several years back as marriage mentors, what I would tell you out of that is that we got so much more in our own marriage when we were helping others.  It required us to really look inward at ourselves.  I know there are a lot of people out there that are struggling at hurting.  I’d encourage you all that getting help and talking to people isn’t a sign of weakness.

I hope and pray for you as the readers to have a great day, and if any of you needs prayer, I’m always happy to do that.

Santa Paws

Our favorite local pet store The Happy Hound was hosting an Christmas event this last Saturday, and we were so excited to take Olive. She’s super social, and loves to meet everyone. They had adoptable dogs, the Grinch, Santa Paws, and all kinds of treats and Christmas-y things. She met so many new friends, and could not contain her excitement. We waited in a line a few minutes for her picture with Santa Paws, and I have to say, I am so happy with how they came out. They’re so funny! Olive is so expressive, and she was not so sure about a giant dog sitting next to her.

Here I feel like she’s thinking, “What in world is that? That is NOT a real dog.” Lil Sis said she was giving him major “side eye”.

Okay, so now she’s giving him a chance. Figuring maybe he can’t be too bad because Nick doesn’t seem to be afraid of him. 😉

Now I think she’s thinking, “Okay, I sat here long enough. I’m ready to go and sniff other dogs and eat stuff off the ground.”

We had such a fun time, and she totally passed out when we got home. It’s definitely super dog-friendly around here, and it’s so fun that there are so many great opportunities to get Olive out and about. It’s so great to see her having so much fun. 🙂

Day 20 – Bring on the weekend

Oh my how I/we love the weekend.  Weekends are always the best, I wouldn’t say I live for the weekend, but it’s just really nice to be able to make some different plans that we can’t do on a normal day.  Today is an eat on repeat of Day 17, but we’ve got the replacement of the smoothie with breakfast and we add in a dessert.  Pretty awesome stuff to be looking ahead to.  I’ll get to the food in a second, but first, we just had a really great day.

Jacks had a baby shower to run off to in the morning, she had a great time.  While she was off doing that I took our baby girl dog off for a mani, pedi and treats with her dad.  How great of a fur dad am I?  Here she is today sporting another find of the day, we accessorized her collar with this lovely flower.

After Jackie got back home we had the tomato soup for lunch and then headed out to Old Town Alexandria down in the district.  Oh my goodness, my favorite neighborhood/area of DC so far.  Its got a bit of the same feel as Georgetown but way less hoitey toitey.  We even photographed better than normal.  🙂  Perfect day for strolling around and looking at some shops and just enjoying the area.  We’ll be back, in fact we’re going next week.  We found a cute little dog shop that is going to do a dog ice cream social next Saturday.  Seriously, Olive is so spoiled.  Do you guys all spoil your fur pets too? Onto the food, so this day brought us some overnight muesli (Apple and Chai Spice Muesli).  We were both a bit skeptical about this, but it did have some really killer ingredients going into it.  (We remembered to put it together at 11:30 PM… OOPS.  Oh well, it was easy other than the shredded apple.  We could have done the oats in the morning per the instructions, but we both thought that would make the oats too firm.  We dumped it out into bowls and topped with a whole heap of fresh berries and some of my raspberry sauce.  It was so good, gave me some of those carbs I was craving, and it stuck with me really well. I’d make it again for sure.

We didn’t so much eat the salad again.  The best lentil salad wasn’t really Jackie’s favorite, so I had a few spoonfuls of it today but we also didn’t feel the need for it while we were out and about.  We replaced it with an apple. The dessert addition for our day was the Blueberry Peach tart with Apricot crumble.  Yum, yum.  First off we finally got medjool dates.  Wow that makes a difference.  They’re so soft and chewy and super sweet.  Wow.  But when it came to the crumble, it probably wouldn’t have mattered, in fact we think they may have had too much moisture going for them for the crumble.  We didn’t really have a dry crumble like Somer called for.  It was pretty sticky.  It still baked up great though.  It made for a delicious, chewy very fruity dessert.  The crumble was something kind of like a chewy granola.  I really enjoyed it, and it kept growing on me.  Really good and a nice way to end off the food day. Thoughts for the day, it would have been nice if we could have stopped in a pub or one of the restaurants while we were out and about, but we’re really wanting to stick this through to the end.  We’re going to be able to do it too.  I’ve got the resolve to make it happen.  😉  We had a lot of fun being out and about, and we got a ton of walking in today. Olive is awfully tired and agrees as well. Thanks for following along with us, I really appreciate having all you readers.

Lazy Saturday, cooking, baking and may as well add a bit of Dog Shaming

Its been a wonderful lazy day today.  I got up this morning read for a bit, made a breakfast burrito and some blueberry muffins.  We followed that up later in the morning with a walk (Basil needs the exercise, not us, j/k).  Anyway, it was COLD.  Yesterday was such a nice change of pace for winter, it was darn near 50 degrees.  Today the wind was biting.  We got home, I cleaned up some limbs that had come down with all the wind.  We tried a wonderful kale salad from Crazy Sexy Kitchen for lunch, then we put together some hummus sliders for Monday, and we baked a cake.  The kale salad was uberly delicious.  I was commenting to Jackie that one of my favorite changes since we made the change to a plant based diet is that the flavors of vegetables actually appeal to me.  I can’t wait to have that one again, it was full of kale, peppers, parsley and avocado.  It has stuck with me all afternoon.   Now that I look at all that, I guess maybe the day hasn’t been so lazy.   Which brings us to the rest of the blog title.

Earlier in the day, Jackie’s mom stopped by and dropped off some items that were Jackie’s when she was younger.  One of those items happened to be a dress that she wore when she was a wee chubby baby.  🙂  I love pointing out that she was a chubby baby, it was seriously SO cute.  Well while I was sitting by reading and enjoying a tea, Jackie decided that Basil needed to try on a dress.  The poor dog was so embarrassed, but I had to help out to get a picture.  Its seriously too funny, even if I feel terrible for him.  Hope you all get a good giggle out of it as well.
Mommy's Darling

Seriously, does he not just look horrified. We don’t do this often, trust me. I know that he hates clothing.

In other news, we’ve got a Blendtec coming on Wednesday. I’m so excited. Green smoothies here we come. Hope you’re all having a great day. Anyone else embarrass their pets from time to time?
